Both crop and animal production generate pollutants that enter
the air as well as surface and ground waters. Such pollution is
difficult to control, and programs designed to address agricultural
pollution have remained largely voluntary. However, growing evidence
suggests that good economic performance is compatible with good
environmental performance. Recent ERS analysis suggests that agricultural
producers can benefit economically by voluntarily adopting environmentally
beneficial practices.
How Much Do Americans Pay For Fruits And Vegetables?

This analysis uses A.C. Neilson Homescan data on 1999 household
food purchases from all types of retail outlets to estimate an
annual retail price per pound and per serving for 69 forms of
fruits and 85 forms of vegetables. Among the forms we priced,
more than half were estimated to cost 25 cents or less per serving.
Consumers can meet the recommendation of three servings of fruits
and four servings of vegetables daily for 64 cents.
Retail Scanner Prices For Meat

Average monthly weighted retail price data for selected cuts of
red meat and poultry based on electronic supermarket scanner data.
While not based on a random sample, the raw data underlying the
database are from supermarkets across the United States that account
for approximately 20 percent of U.S. supermarket sales. This data
set supplements similar data supplied by the Bureau of Labor Statistics
(BLS). Currently, BLS data are used to derive ERS published price
spreads from farm to retail.
