New Molecular Diagnostic Tests for BVD and PRRS Viruses

The University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has implemented molecular diagnostic testing based on the highly sensitive real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) methodology for the detection of BVD (bovine viral diarrhea) and PRRS (porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome) viruses.

This method will enable the detection of a smaller number of viral particles than with past methods. The improved sensitivity will aid in the eradication efforts of the PRRS virus. Also, the qRT-PCR method enables more specific identification of the virus, which can aid in vaccine virus strain selection.
