The University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has
implemented molecular diagnostic testing based on the highly sensitive
real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR)
methodology for the detection of BVD (bovine viral diarrhea) and
PRRS (porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome) viruses.
This method will enable the detection of a smaller number of
viral particles than with past methods. The improved sensitivity
will aid in the eradication efforts of the PRRS virus. Also, the
qRT-PCR method enables more specific identification of the virus,
which can aid in vaccine virus strain selection.
The sample selection, collection, and preparation is critical.
Veterinarians should contact the laboratory for details before
collection. The laboratory phone number is 217/333-1620.
