Families and ...
Respect
Families come in all sizes, colors and shapes. Your family is the one place that you should always find love and acceptance, even when there is pain and conflict. It is not always easy to find time to be a family in todays hurried world. Yet, it is almost necessary to make the time to concentrate on the "family" no matter how the world rushes by.
The following activity, based on the experiential learning model will help your family realize the ways in which it is special and unique. The following activity is designed to help family members understand the importance of family-we all come with experiences that help to build the future. Individuals together make a family. You will need crayons, pencils, and paper for everyone.
Activity : Lets Picture Our Family
Do it: Assemble the family members around a table or on the floor. Make sure each person can see all the others. An adult or older sibling should lead the family by saying, "Lets talk about our family. When I say "our family", what do you think of?" The leader should ask all family members to take a piece of paper and draw a picture of his or her family. Allow enough time for everyone to complete their pictures
Share it: Talk about the pictures when everyone has finished. Children can be equal participants in discussion.
Look Closely: What similarities and differences do you see in the pictures? Some things could be hard to share. What stories do you hear emerging from family members?
Generally Speaking: Memories can be both positive and negative. You can talk about how this activity helped you learn more about your family members.
Extending our Knowledge: This activity is one way to help you understand one another. All families are not the same. Think about other ways that your family is special and unique, and what talents each member brings to your family. What makes the relationships special?
