Coleus

History & Origin

Coleus is native to Java, Asia, Africa, and Australia.

When to Plant

Plant after all danger from frost.

How to Plant

Coleus grows best in light shade where its color will look best. Set the plants six to twelve inches apart.

Special Care

Coleus is grown for its colorful foliage (leaves), not its flowers. To make the colorful foliage last longer, pinch the main stem of the plant back two to three inches. This will give you a bushier plant.

Coleus root from cuttings easily. In the fall pot up a coleus from the garden; take cuttings and root them in water. Rooted plants can be potted up.
