Broad habit is interesting in all seasons; deeply furrowed bark (becomes more prominent as the tree ages).
Full sun; moist, well drained soils, but tolerates dryness; tolerant of alkaline sites.
Broad spreading, with a short trunk (crown of the tree is usually much wider than it is high).
Additional pests and problems that may affect this plant:
Female trees will produce fruit and self seed. In some areas of the country this has caused the tree to become a pest.
This tree has a wide spreading root system. This, coupled with the width of the crown, keeps it from being used streetside; male and female flowers are on separate trees; female trees produce small fruit that can be a minor litter problem.
