Drooping clusters of small, white, fragrant, bell-like flowers in spring; shiny, evergreen leaves with new leaves emerging reddish or bronze then turning dark green; in winter, dormant flower buds have a reddish color.
Numerous cultivars including:
- 'Compacta' - 6 feet tall, flowers profusely
- 'Mountain Fire' - New leaves emerge red.
- 'Scarlett O'Hara' - Narrow form with new leaves emerging red.
