Preventing Falls
If you have osteoporosis or low bone density, it is very important to prevent falling. An important part of reducing the risk of a fall is preventing the fall before it ever occurs. Here are some tips to make your life fall free!
Personal Attire
- Wear nonskid, low-heeled shoes rather than socks or slippers when walking indoors or out
- Wear skirts or pants at a length that they won't trip you
Kitchen
- Never stand on a chair to reach a shelf
- Place most frequently used items on lower shelves that are most easily reached
Bathrooms
- Install safety bars in the tub
- Put on nonskid mat near the tub or toilet
Stairway
- Keep stairways well lit
- Install secure handrails
All Rooms
- Make sure lighting is adequate
- Keep all electrical cords and phone cords out of high-traffic areas
- Keep hallways and rooms free from clutter
- Have walkways cleared of ice and snow immediately
Other Ways to Minimize Falls
- Engage in exercise, with approval by your doctor
- Minimize alcohol use, eat well and make sure to drink enough fluid
- Arise slowly from sitting or lying positions, so you won't become dizzy or faint
