"This World Wide Web (WWW) site, maintained by the University of Illinois Extension, contains interdisciplinary lessons that introduce students in grades 4 to 5 to plant science and the way that foods grow. The site is divided into two sections, one for teachers and one for students. Both sections are subdivided into six lessons about topics including humans' relationship with plants, the soil, and the parts of plants. The students are led by the characters Bud, Sprout, and Professor LePlant to find clues, do experiments, and solve problems as they journey into the world of plants. They see the goals and main ideas for each lesson, are presented the background facts to help them solve the plant mysteries, and get the instructions for the hands-on activities. Both individual and group assignments are incorporated into the activities. The teachers' guide provides classroom management tips, background information, and extension ideas. Teachers can also find lists of additional resources related to each of the lessons."

"Designed for younger students, this Web site from the University of Illinois Extension offers a number fun, interactive programs on a variety of life science topics. Most of the activities include a guide for teachers, which differ in level of detail. The activities themselves vary in their format and features, from animated cartoons with minimal text to pages of text with no diagrams at all. Check the teachers' guide of each activity for appropriate grade level. The activity about earthworms titled The Adventures of Herman is especially fun, with lots of worm-related games, links, and even an online art gallery to which students are encouraged to contribute."

"The University of Illinois Extension provides these two excellent activities about plants. From the "Just for Kids" page, click on "Exploring the Secret Life of Trees" for a well-designed tour of the life of a tree. The pages load slowly, but the reward is well worth it. A cartoon acorn named Pierre Quercus explains the role of the roots and trunk and how children can help take care of an important renewable resource. Choose "The Great Plant Escape" to meet Bud and Sprout as they assist Detective LePlant in solving six plant mysteries, which are actually clever lessons on the parts of plants and their life cycles. Each case requires the reader to learn some basic plant facts and then to answer a few simple questions. The colorful progression of the task makes learning fun. Both links are interactive and provide audio-enhanced, graphics only, and Spanish versions."
