"After the review, go to the website, “Let’s Talk About Insects”, at http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/insects/index.html. This wonderful, interactive site is provided by the University of Illinois Extension and is designed to help 4th to 6th grade students learn about insects and their importance in the environment. The website includes a teacher’s guide, which has been included with the handouts in your binder and can also be accessed at: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/insects/guide/index.html. Additional classroom activities (including some worksheets) are provided on their website: http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/insects/guide/activities.html, as well as being included in your binder.
If the computers utilized for this activity have speakers, the students can read along as the narrator presents the material. Once students have completed the interactive presentation, they can click on “next” to go to CP’s Fun Place and participate in the “Am I An Insect?” activity. This activity will help them determine if they can differentiate between insects and other organisms. By returning to CP’s Fun Place, students can click on the “Eee Gads…A New Bug” link to create a new insect. Once the new insects have been named and described, they can be e-mailed to a friend, printed and mailed to a friend, and also e-mailed to C.P. to be posted online in his bug collection, the Insect Hall of Fame."

http://coe.nevada.edu/jjett/favorites.html
"This website was informative in explaining to children that bugs are not all gross and yucky but in fact are very important to the environment and do a lot of work that keeps the planet healthy. it also has fun graphics and a game at the end of the program.
Potential Problems for Students with:
Learning Disabilities: The potential problems that I could foresee would be if any students had problems with moving text, or visual impairment because the pictures sometimes bounce around and flash bright colors.
Mental Disabilities: A student with a mental disability might not understand that some of the real insects they see are animated pictures of bugs, not actual bugs on the computer screen. Therefore, a teacher might be aware if they freak out around bugs to watch students who might be susceptible to that.
Physical Disabilities: If any students have visual impairments, the flashing words could be hard to read and possibly cause seizures.
Additional Comments: I thought this was a really interesting website to learn about bugs. The authors presented the information very clearly and easy for younger students to understand. The facts about insects were presented in a way to help children understand that not all bugs are bad. It teaches them that there are good insects in the world that help the environment a lot. I only had a minor problem with the speed of the pictures when they loaded up sometimes. On a few of the pictures, it had a blank white screen while it was loading up the next segment. Students might get impatient and click a few times to try to hurry it along when they would actually be skipping to the next picture. A suggestion might be to have a little picture of a bug watching a clock to let the students know they have to wait a little bit for the picture to load up."

Nevada College of Education -Educational Website Evaluation: Let's Talk About Insects
http://coe.nevada.edu/jjett/insects.webev.html
"Summary of website: This website is part of a series of websites available through the Urban Programs Resource Network. This particular website is an introduction of insects and what makes a bug an insect or not, what types of insects there are in the world, and how insects grow, eat, and reproduce.
General Criteria
Content: The website introduces the world of insects to students from the third through the fifth grade. It teaches them that bugs are not gross, but instead a very important part of our environment. They learn what is classified as an insect, how they grow, how they eat, the different kinds of insects in the world and some numbers of how many insects live on Earth.
Timeliness: The information provided in the website is general knowledge of insects so it is not required to be updated frequently.
Ease of Use: The website is easy to navigate through, there are two main buttons to control where to go: next and back. This is a very easy format for third to fifth graders to use. There no internal search engine to look for a particular page, so students would have to either click back and forth if they wanted to find a particular page or they could go to the index page and look for the specific page they wanted and click on it from there.
Presentation of Website: The website is very appealing to students, especially boys because the title page has the words “Let’s Talk About” and then bugs come crawling out to form the word “INSECTS” it looks creepy but visually gets the students’ attention. The information is presented logically and animated pictures are used throughout the presentation. The animated parts may pose a problem to certain students with sensitivity to flashing objects because some of the highlighted words flash on and off to bring attention to that word. Real pictures of insects and what they do for the environment are also presented so the students gain more knowledge of what insects do in our world.
Appropriateness for Digital Format: I think the format is appropriate for digital media because it allows the students to learn about the insects in a more interesting way instead of just reading about them in a book. The basic information of insects is presented in an animated format to bring attention to specific parts and how it relates to the next topic. They get more of a sense of how insects are a big part of our environment. The animated parts make the information more appealing to students who like interactive programs.
Special Features: The website features a page for teachers and suggestions of how it can be taught in the classroom. The site also gives an email address if you have any questions or comments about this website or any of their other websites. It has a section at the end that allows students to play a couple of games such as “Eek, a New Bug!” where students can choose what kind of antennae, wings, legs, and color it has. Then they decide what it eats, where it lives, and whether it is a good bug or a pest. Finally, they can put it on the Bug Hall of Fame where everyone can see it."

"Let’s Talk About Insects, follows a format similar to the university’s tree site. The site “is designed to help students ages 9-11 years of age gain an appreciation of insects; learn how insects grow and develop (metamorphosis), and the importance of insects
in our environment”. The host this time is C.P. Ant, a carpenter ant. The Teacher's Guide provides ideas for related classroom activities like building a model insect. It also provides worksheets to download and an anticipatory guide to prepare students for using the
site effectively. A combination of diagrams and photos of various insects provide a visually stimulating environment. Teachers could have the students work through each of the slides in small groups or
use the site as a whole group activity. You can page through the screens at your own pace, and you don’t have to wait for the audio clip to finish before clicking on the next screen. This is a handy feature if you want to ‘fast forward’ to a particular screen to show the class."

"This is an excellent animated resource for introducing teachers and students to Entomology. The interactive Flash animation covers classification, basic anatomy, beneficial vs. pest insects, and life cycles. The dialog is engaging, clear, and accurate at the elementary level. After completing the animation students have additional activities and exercises available to them. The links at the top of the page are particularly helpful. Users can access an index of the Flash animation slides, as well as a Teacher's Guide that includes example classroom activities and statewide learning standards for 3rd - 5th grades. Available in English and Spanish. Also available on CD."
