"This World Wide Web (WWW) site, maintained for grades 4 and 5 by the Urban Programs Resource Network of the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service (CES), offers a curriculum in which Detective LePlant and his partners Bud and Sprout guide students through the mysteries of plant science to increase their understanding of how foods grow. Each of the lessons in this program is interdisciplinary, designed to enhance students' skills in math, science, language arts, social studies, music and art. The six lessons cover the structure and function of the parts of a plant, soils and seeds, and plant reproduction and propagation as well as the life cycles of perennials, biennials, and annuals. Each lesson is presented in the context of a mystery case with a series of questions to answer. Students read the Case Brief and the Facts of the Case to answer the questions, then they take an on line quiz to check their knowledge. Each lesson is followed by an online activity and a hands-on activity to do a home. In a sample activity, students create their our own plant monster from different plant parts and call it Plantenstein. Vocabulary words are linked to the Great Plant Glossary. Students are invited to email their questions to Detective LePlant. For each lesson, the teacher's guide provides ideas for setting up the classroom laboratory, a summary of learning objectives, background information, and extensions. Annotated bibliography Green Links help users find sites for children, gardening supplies, and grants for starting school or community gardens. (Author/LCT)"
