Dr. Griffith Buck Roses
Dr. Griffith Buck was an Iowa State University rose hybridizer.
He developed a number of varieties that are excellent landscape
roses because of their winter hardiness and disease resistance.
Dr. Buck applied the Darwinian principle of survival of the fittest
to his roses. If his roses couldn't survive the winter without protection
and maintain good foliage without fungicides, he felt they didn't
deserve to be introduced on the market. Just another pretty face
didn't count much in his breeding program. His roses are sometimes
referred to as "sub-zero" roses.
