Leia Kedem is a registered dietitian and is a licensed dietitian/nutritionist in the state of Illinois. In 2014, Kedem was recognized by Central Illinois Business magazine as one of their top "Forty Under 40." She is President-Elect of the Eastern Illinois Dietetic Association.
As a Nutrition & Wellness Educator, she teaches workshops in Champaign, Ford, Iroquois, and Vermilion Counties on a wide variety of nutrition topics like weight management, healthy cooking, food safety, food preservation, diabetes, heart health, and more.
Kedem is passionate about countering biased and unscientific health advice. She advocates for consumer health literacy by tackling controversial topics in her bimonthly "To Your Health" column with the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette. These articles are posted concurrently on the Illinois Nutrition Edition blog.
She also works to raise University of Illinois Extension's media profile through television appearances. She appears weekly on WCIX-49's The Morning Show for her "Recipe Rescue" segment, in which she makes healthier versions of viewer-submitted recipes. On WCIA-3's Current, she provides research-based information on fad diets, hot topics, and other current nutrition issues. Recent segment topics include stress eating, diabetes myths, and aphrodisiac foods. She is also a monthly guest on WCIA-3's ciLiving, a lifestyle show highlighting activities in central Illinois.
Kedem is also active on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube as "Moderation Maven." Using social media as an outreach tool, Kedem shares her recipe makeovers, links to blog posts and videos and answers nutrition questions.
Education and Research
Kedem earned her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and Master of Science degree in nutritional sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She completed her dietetic internship through the University of Houston in Texas. She also holds both Level 1 and Level 2 Certificates of Training in Adult Weight Management from the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Kedem is an active member of the Academy of the Nutrition & Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association) and serves on the leadership team for the Nutrition Education for the Public dietetic practice group. She is also a member of the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior.
She has presented her research on attitudes towards diet and health at the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics' annual meeting and the conference of the American Society for Nutrition. Her work has been published in scholarly publications such as the American Journal of Health Behavior and Behavior Modification.
