Lisa Fulkerson earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1988 and a master's degree in elementary/gifted education from Western Illinois University in 1995.

Fulkerson previously worked as a classroom teacher for 12 years at the middle school level, where she taught a range of subjects including reading, language arts, science, humanities and study skills.
