What's best for establishing connections with the family?

"Parent participation" with teen parents often means involving the whole family or parts of the family.

It is important to know:

• Who is "the family" for the teen parent and the child?

• Who is likely to help with bringing the child to you, and who is allowed to pick the child up?

• Who is the emergency contact? You will want more than one person in case the parent can't be reached.

In making connections with the family members, plan ways they can be involved. Invite grandparents and other family members to parent meetings. Involve the child's father as well as mother. Both parents are vitally important in the child's life.

Make sure your child care setting is "father friendly" and welcomes all members of the family.
