Because each person and family has special needs, you will want to develop your own record keeping system. Whatever system you devise, make sure that it:

  • is easy for you to keep, use, and update.

  • would be easy for other members of your household -- or even a trusted friend or relative -- to understand and use if necessary.

  • contains names, addresses, and telephone numbers of persons who know facts about your personal affairs and would be important contacts in time of emergency.

  • provides a summary of real estate and personal property held in your name or held jointly with others.

  • provides a central spot, well known and understood by all family members, where some records and papers are actually kept as well as information about where the others are stored.
